There are many ways to enhance your smile’s appearance. The first step is a full check-up to assess concerns, followed by a thorough cleaning to remove surface stains.
Teeth Whitening Options
Whitening is a popular cosmetic procedure, available in two main types: take-home and in-office treatments.
After a consultation, impressions of your teeth are taken to create custom-fitted trays. At the next visit, the trays are adjusted if needed, and your dentist provides instructions. Most patients wear the trays with whitening gel overnight and see results in about two weeks. If overnight use is uncomfortable, trays can be worn for 4-6 hours, such as after dinner until bedtime.
At Brighter Smile, our in-office whitening includes a take-home kit for long-term maintenance. Impressions are taken at the consultation to create customized trays. At the second visit, teeth are isolated with a special gum barrier, desensitized, and treated with whitening gel, activated by a Sapphire light in two 15-minute sessions. Results are visible immediately, though we recommend wearing the take-home trays for a week to stabilize the effect.
Whitening is safe and does not harm teeth. Possible side effects include temporary gum irritation or sensitivity, both of which resolve within a week. Fillings and crowns do not whiten, and certain types of discoloration may not respond to treatment.
Many store-bought kits contain ineffective ingredients and lack custom-fit trays, leading to uneven results and increased gum irritation.
Use a soft toothbrush and sensitive toothpaste. Applying a desensitizing gel, such as Tooth Mousse, in the tray every other night can also help.
Results vary based on diet and lifestyle. Avoiding staining foods like curry, tomato-based sauces, red wine, tea, coffee, and smoking can prolong the effect. Most patients require a touch-up kit every 6-12 months. Brushing and flossing are everyday ways to keep your teeth bright, white and healthy.
Dazzling smiles seem to be within everyone’s reach, thanks to the booming teeth-whitening business. From over-the-counter strips to treatments in a dentist’s office, you have a lot of options for brightening up stained or darkened teeth. Side effects aren’t common when you use at-home products as directed, but they can happen. Before you start a do-it-yourself whitening routine, though, learn how to keep your smile safe.
Even if whitening at home, a professional cleaning and dental exam can help restore brightness and ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.
At-home whiteners contain peroxides ranging from 10% to 20%. A moderate level is recommended, with adjustments based on results and sensitivity.
Overuse can cause gum irritation and other issues. After whitening, avoid acidic drinks like soda and sports drinks for a few hours to protect your teeth.
Pregnant or nursing women should postpone whitening. Dental crowns and bondings will not lighten, which may lead to an uneven smile or the need for replacements.
Mild sensitivity is normal and temporary. If discomfort persists, stop treatment and consult your dentist. Poorly fitting trays may also irritate gums, so discontinue use if irritation occurs.
